paddle boardThere’s no better season for enjoying the great outdoors than summer. Between the sunshine, warm weather and breathtaking foliage, summer is ideal for a number of outdoor activities, whether it be hiking, swimming, surfing or volleyball. Unfortunately, because of the potential danger in some of these activities, hospitals see a significantly higher volume of injuries suffered from participating in outdoor activities in the summertime. Two of the most common summer injuries that we treat here at AFC Urgent Care Beaumont are joint pain and back pain. Here are a few ways to avoid these injuries:

Avoid Activities You’re Not Physically Fit Enough For

While it’s healthy to engage in new and exciting activities, you must know your body’s limits. If you’ve never surfed before, it’s probably not a great idea to try it out on an overcast day with 15-foot waves. This principle applies to any activity, even if it’s as every day an activity as exercising. Don’t try to over-exert yourself, whether you’re just lifting weights or going for a run, play it safe.

Stretch Out Before Participating in a Physically Strenuous Activity

While there are studies that suggest that stretching doesn’t reduce muscle soreness, there’s a reason we see professional athletes stretching before and throughout sporting matches. Stretching is proven to help significantly improve athletic performance and limit the risk of injury. If you’re experiencing joint pain, your range of motion is likely limited, and stretching will help increase it. Over time, this should help limit the amount of joint pain you’re suffering from.

Eat Healthily and Limit Your Consumption of Alcohol

Arthritis is one of the most common illnesses associated with joint pain. Arthritis causes inflammation in one or more joints, which can be very painful and often worsens with age. However, these symptoms can be minimized, as certain foods are proven to help reduce inflammation. Many of these foods are in-season throughout summer, including salmon, citrus, and berries. Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids, which is one of the most healthy compounds in the United States, which has significant evidence suggesting it majorly reduces inflammation.
